A native Californian, Dorris Dann graduated from Whittier College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and later pursued graduate studies at UCLA.
Ms. Dann spent over thirty years (1956-1987) of her professional career in the apparel industry as a women’s fashions buyer for J.W. Robinson Co., and later for the 52-store Broadway division of Carter, Hawley, Hale, Inc. While a buyer of women’s sportswear, she was an active member of the Los Angeles retail industry and a member of the Fashion Group.
Shortly after retiring from the retail industry in 1987, Ms. Dann became the Executive Director of Church of Our Saviour’s Our Saviour Center, located in El Monte, California. Initially, the Center was solely a food pantry, providing emergency food to approximately 35 families weekly in a leased warehouse on Rush Street in South El Monte. In 1989, in response to clients in crisis, the Center began a Personal Services program to assist homeless individuals and families begin the process of achieving stability. Since that time, the scope of the Center’s work has expanded to provide a comprehensive set of social and medical programs to benefit the under served residents of the Greater El Monte area.
Dorris was instrumental in the development and building of the Dorris Dann Kids Campus. Since 2006 DDKC has provided educational and enrichment services to the kids of the city of El Monte. Our goal is to encourage and prepare youth to succeed! We achieve this by reinforcing their development in: academics, learning, heath issues, well-being, enrichment through arts, athletics, social interaction, and community responsibility.
